STUDY TOUR TO PONDICHERRY AUROVILLE AND CHENNAI
21st December to 29th December 2019
Students of T.Y.B.Arch of B. R. Harne College of Architecture, along with three faculty members visited Pondicherry, Auroville and Chennai for their study tour for the academic year 2018-19. The duration of this tour was for 9 days from 21st to 30th December 2019.
The tour aimed at giving an overall perspective on architecture including the historical structures of Mahabalipuram, the French heritage colony at Pondicherry, the sustainable structures of Auroville, the traditional south Indian structures at Dakshin Chitra, and the modern green structures in Chennai.
Prior to going for the study tour, the students were briefed about their destinations and were divided in groups to do the background studies. Documentation assignments were planned and assigned to each group.
Puducherry, it is a Union Territory town having streets dotted with colorful, colonial-era buildings boasting of splendid architecture, that adorn this erstwhile French colony of Pondicherry. Soon after reaching Pondicherry on 23rd December, the students went for the UNESCO heritage walk through the French colony escorted by their guide.
Experimentation in building done in Auroville covers various aspects of architecture, and includes building materials, building technology, eco-friendly architecture, climate responsive designs, integration with natural surroundings, cost-effective buildings, forms and geometry, as well as the design of spaces themselves, including experimenting with the lifestyle of the user. There has also been extension into the design and management of building infrastructure, the building of integrated rainwater harvesting systems, domestic waste water treatment plants and the integration of renewable energy systems for energy demands.
Students visited following structures in Auroville for 3 days from 24th to 26th December studying the above parameters.
The students had a guided tour and witnessed our cultural heritage during this visit on 27th December 2018. They learned about the history of Mahabalipuram and about our ancient craft of planning and construction.
4. DAKSHINA CHITRA, CHENNAI:
Students visited Dakshina Chitra on 28th December on the way to Chennai. They documented different styles of architecture from South India, their planning and construction.
